An Australian native Budgerigar sits on a tree branch. Iningai Nature Reserve, Longreach.

The Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) is a parrot native to Australia. Also known as the budgie or, in the United States, a parakeet, its plumage is bright yellow and green, with a blue cheek and black scalloping on its wing feathers. The colours we’ve become familiar with, such as blue or yellow are a result of selective breeding.
