About the day

I usually run these sessions in the Toowoomba CBD and Queens Park gardens. We work out the exact meeting place before the course.

We start at 9:00am stopping for an hour lunch at about 12:00. Finishing at 4:00pm.

For this session you will need:

  • Digital SLR, High end Point and Shoot OR Film Camera. You MUST be able to set your camera to manual mode.
  • Your camera manual.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Suitable clothing for all wet and dry weather conditions.

Topics available, but not limited to:

  • basic camera operation – what the setting mean
  • shooting modes – manual, auto or semi-automatic
  • aperture, shutter speed and ISO – what it all means
  • how to read a histogram – exposure is everything
  • jpg vs. raw – what file format to shoot in
  • metering – how the camera measures light
  • metering modes – how to choose which one to use
  • white balance – what it is and how you can use it
  • exposure compensation – adjusting exposure
  • focusing – auto, manual, selecting focus points
  • lenses -which focal length suits the job
  • how to check things turned out right – histograms and other info
  • composition – setting up the shot
  • portraiture – a step by step process to better portraits
  • landscapes – some things you need to know
  • low light – what can go wrong and what can go right
